Mind Your Business

Putting First Things First!

  • Who or What is first?
  • What are your priorities?
  • What are your staff’s priorities?  Do they match?
  • How are you able to find that work/play balance?
  • Do you want to find that work/play balance?

Servant Leadership

What is Servant Leadership (SL) and why should you read on? Because this is bigger than you and I. SL is someone who is servant first, who has responsibility to be in the world, and so he contributes to the well-being to the people and community in the world. SL is placing the main focus on people, because only content and motivated people are able to reach their targets and t fulfill the set expectations. Once you begin to study this it’s easy to see why it’s not about you, it’s about how you champion people to help them achieve their goals. Remember: “Help as many people get what they want and you can have everything you want.”

The Whole Person

During my presentation at the BEC conference back in March, I talked about dealing with the whole person. I talked about the fact that you don’t hire a professional person who happens to do a particular job, but that you hire a whole person. People work for you who have other interest, hobbies and of course personal baggage. Sometime they bring this baggage to work. My mentor, Tom Hassey, use to tell me, “Every day you’ve got to take your employees’ temperature!!” This was done by walking in their offices and sincerely asking “how are you doing?” or “What’s new” or “how was your weekend?” Sometimes you don’t want to know, but you begin to know the whole person on both a professional and a personal basis.

Who/What’s First?

Of course this is a rhetorical question. Once you figure out that you need everyone else to further your success in any endeavor, it’s easy to see what or who comes first. It’s your clients, employees, your family, your wife, the guy who stops at the stop sign the same time you do. Everyone comes first.  If you live by putting you first, this means a lonely road ahead. The running back can’t block the linemen to gain the yardage for the first down; he is subservient to the “big guys” on the line.

Finding Balance

If you’re looking to find a balance with your professional life and your personal life, try serving and see where that leads you, you just might be surprised what you learn.
