Become a Monster!
While listening to one of my many podcasts, someone mentioned a conversation they had with Jordan Peterson. Like many conversations with Peterson, it takes some unpacking to understand what he truly means. For this to make sense, you must understand where he’s coming from.
“You should not be weak or docile, but what you should do is become a monster,” Peterson said. “… Then you must learn to control that monster.”
Let’s get something clear. Peterson is not talking about a monster like you see in the movies or whatever you think in your mind. The monster that he describes is that person who is passionate about their aim, their goals and what sacrifices they’ll make to achieve those goals.
Why become a monster? It’s more about your ability to develop and possess a relentless ambition to pursue your greatest goals in life and be able to contribute to all of society. Sadly, many people never think about their life goals, let alone sit down to define them and develop a plan.
They go through life like a sheet in the wind, moving in whatever direction the wind takes them. Like jumping from job to job, relationship to relationship or even from car to car.
For most of us, it takes the attitude of that monster to fight the wind while pursuing our aim.
One reason people might be reluctant is that it becomes a measuring stick. Many people don’t want to measure up to such a high standard. Why? Because if you set that goal and fall short, you might be afraid to fail. It’s much easier to not set a goal at all.
We’re all motivated by many obstacles. That is why you must learn to be that monster and fight through and stay on your path toward your goal. Your aim should become your highest priority and it should guide every step you take.
So today, what are you fighting for?
