Mind Your Business,

Be a Rock Star Today

I’m not a fan of TV commercials, most of them are stupid and pointless. However, I do watch them when they’re creative and make me laugh. I also love it when the ad makes fun of everyday lingo we take for granted.

One that I really like is from Workday. In the ad, they make fun of people in business, and when complimenting others, they like to use the phrase “You’re a rock star.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been guilty of using that phrase occasionally. Yes, it is overused, but that’s what makes it so funny. We’ve all used it as a compliment for someone. I guess it’s because, as a kid, we all wanted to be famous rock stars. The crux of the phrase is that none of us know what it’s like to be a rock star, only a rock star knows what that’s like, and that’s what is so upsetting to the old rock stars.

Here are a couple of the funniest moments from parts of the commercials.

  • On the golf course, Rory Mcllroy compliments “Doug” for being a real human resources rock star. Billy Idol comes out of the woods and asks, “What do you know about being a rock star?” Idol then steals the golf cart because that’s what real rock stars do.
  • One of the scenes I really enjoy is when two people are complimenting each other before the camera pans to the back of a random person’s head. The person turns around, and it’s none other than Ozzy Osbourne.
  • The best part of that commercial is during a company meeting, a man turns to “Pam” and is about to tell her that she’s a rock star. The conference door opens, and it’s Paul Stanley from KISS. He shows his face to the camera as if to say, “Don’t say it.” Embarrassed, the manager hangs his head and says, “I wasn’t gonna say it.” Stanley then slowly closes the door.

So, go and be a “rock star.”

My 2 cents.
