If you’re in a job that you feel is not a good fit, or doesn’t fulfill you, you have probably said I was made for more.

In my last blog, I asked the question of what “more” meant to you. More of what? I think it has nothing to do with any materialistic things. What it does have everything to do with is using your God-given talents, gifts and interests to bring a better good to others. In other words, using your talents for the benefit of others.

Many years ago, I was offered a job that paid more money than I imagined. At the time, I thought, it didn’t matter what the job was, as much as I made that much money, I’d learn to like it. But you guessed it, I didn’t perform well because my heart wasn’t into it.

While I was working on my job I found myself daydreaming about what my career could look like if money were not the main consideration. Within the year, my boss and I both decided this was not a good fit and we parted ways.

I learned my lesson. Twenty years later a good friend of mine, who’s the Southwest regional manager for one of the large nationwide brokerage firms, wanted to hire and train me to be a stockbroker. He said it would take two years to build my client base. It was a commission position, but he believed in me.

He told me he would pay me a good salary for the first two years. I considered taking the offer, because I love working with people, and knew if I gave it my all, I would be successful. But at the end of the day, I had to turn him down. I have never been interested in the stock market, and to be successful at anything, you must be 100% committed, and that job wasn’t in my heart.

If you think fulfillment is based on how much money you make, or what status level you achieve, then you’re barking up the wrong tree. Trust me. The ego will feel fulfilled, but only in the short term. In the long run, you eventually say, I was made for something more.

How crazy is it to think that for you to be fulfilled, you must be able to help people get what they need? It’s so counterintuitive to think, that to get what I want, I have to help other people get what they want. It seems crazy but it’s true. I think the great Saint Francis of Assisi said it best….

For it is in Giving that we Receive

It is in Pardoning that we are Pardoned

And it is in Dying that we are Born again

Are you going to help someone get what they want today?
